On Monday October 13, 2008 Kim Halberg will attend the 11th Oasis World Ministries Banquet. This exciting event will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Minnetonka, Minnesota. The author of Meet Me at the Oasis, published in 2006, will be at hand after the meal and program at a Meet the Author table. Thank you to all who stopped by my booth, FROM LIGHT-BULB TO INK PRESS!, at the Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators (MACHE) spring conference. I am currently writing the ending of our two-day compilation of sentences about Derf the Betta Fish. His journey begins in Dulth where the MACHE conference was held April 18 & 19, 2008.
Random people stopped by to read, write and opine. This is a unique story with twists and turns written by a host of people. All I did was introduce the first line: There once was a BETTA fish named ________. I have drafted the conclusion of Derf’s tale as a Betta Fish. I plan to publish it on this web site as soon as I meet with my writer’s group in the next two weeks.
Stay tuned! For more information about having me come as an Author in Residence to do my 2 hour writer’s workshop, you may contact me via email: kshalberg@juno.com. My base fee is $50 per group.

It’s been a while! In January 2008 I went to Thailand with a team of people from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. After regrouping for a night in Bangkok, our team headed north for six hours. Then our two vans went through the mountains to the city of Mae Sot.
There we met up with Neill and Diana Gilbert. They started an orphanage, Home of Hope, several years ago when a local pastor asked them to take in a couple of stray kids. Who could have foreseen renting a home to accommodate 20 plus kids and a staff? Now, thanks to our GREAT GOD, some new things are developing. (Yes, despite what current fad trends of culture may say HE is a Good, GREAT GOD!)
The great Mae Sot wall was built around the land (the size of a couple of football fields). Funds for the land and wall came through generous donations, thank you! Our team painted that gray cement wall with white primer paint. That wall was thirsty and drank up gallons and gallons of paint. Meanwhile, the kids from Home of Hope learned a new skill: how to paint. They even got some on the wall! Then we switched to blue. A beautiful robin egg shell blue. The color of a bright clear sky filled with hope for the day. One day there will be two buildings filled with over 100 Thai children with a future of HOPE!
We also went up the mountain to visit two Hill Tribes, a kind of National Geographic type experience. It was an eye opener to learn about their lives and offer an exchange of learning about Jesus Christ. There was a stark contrast between beauty of the people and their gorgeous mountain landscape with their pain and poverty. Once again, I was reminded that living simple is not to be equated with poverty. However, children without proper clothing on, some only with a ragged old shirt and too many with worn out heel-missing-flip-flops, is something that stabs at my heart like a sharp knife. You can be sure we did something about it. After we came back down those dusty rutted roads back to the city of Mae Sot, we went shopping.
To bring the words of life about Jesus Christ and not do something about children without basic clothing needs isn’t exactly putting feet to my faith. I do not say this to brag, it is just a report of what I saw and what I did. If there be any goodness that propels me to good works let it be to the glory of my GREAT GOD. You see, if I had not given my life to him in 1979, I doubt I would have the desire or the courage to even attempt to go to Thailand. Since then I have been on one wild and scary ride. Not that I get it right all the time, just ask those who know me! But he is a patient God and adventuresome and challenging and guiding and helping. I know some people call him a myth, a fable or a crutch. Well, so be it. I respect it. But, oh, how boring!

Kim Halberg will be speaking about one of her favorite topics, “GOD DREAMS” at The Creek Church Ministry Center in Maple Grove. What is “GOD DREAMS” ?
It is that thought, idea, or spark that God drops into you and asks “Will you do this adventure with me?” Perhaps it is as simple as God inviting you to walk through your neighborhood and pray. Or it could be a huge step like going back to college, starting a non profit ministry, adopting a child, and whatever else is crossing your mind right now. But how do we know that it is God and not the left over pizza we ate this morning? And what if the adventure is too big for us? Ah, ha! Then maybe you should come and join us in the journey of dreaming about “God Dreams” on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at The Creek Ministry Center, 11236-86th Ave, Maple Grove, MN, 55369 @ 7 PM. This event is free.
The Creek Ministry Center is an office condo off of Weaver Lake, Zachary, and Hemlock. Office: 763-494-4451 WEB: www.thecreekchurch.com

In May I wrote about God Dreams for the FWI Blog site (Foursquare Women International). It was a good way to reflect on my journey of writing and how through God’s help, and my hard work, I was able to finally become a published author. To God be the glory. However, if we do not team up with God and do our part and sit in the chair and type and retype…well, I guess I do not expect answered prayers served up on a silver platter. Having said that, of course we can all think of times when a blessing came our way, and easily. That is the goodness of the Lord, and I love that. Still, sometimes, we gotta roll up our sleeves and get the job done. Wisdom to know the difference, that’s what I need.
Oh, the web site link? fwi.foursquare.org/blog/index.cfm?logout=youbet
If this does not work for you simply go to the Foursquare Women International home page. I hope this blog will encourage men, women and children to pursue thier dreams, ideas, and goals, that are swirling around in thier minds, hearts, and souls.

The Journey of Writing
Christian author and mother of three grown sons, Kim Halberg, will share about her journey as a writer and mother through interviews sprinkled with selected readings from her recent release, Meet Me at the Oasis: Leaving a Legacy to Echo in Eternity at the Northwestern Bookstore, Coon Rapids at 13040 Riverdale Drive, Saturday, May 12th from 1-4 pm. For more information call 763-252-1961. (Close to Walmart.)
Genre: Biography for non profit organization, Oasis World Ministries, following the lives of co-founders, Tom and Vicki Elie who are based in the Twin Cities with a focus in India. Aprox 436 pages with color photos.
Spring Greetings from Kim!
Hello all, I hope you can stop in and catch one of the three interview sessions on Saturday, May 12th at NW Books in Coon Rapids. I have three great ladies from various backgrounds coming to interview me at the top of each hour:
1pm is Katje Piela, my neighbor a physical therapist, and mother of two teenage girls, and a dear friend that cracks me up with her zest for life and her outrageous sense of humour.
2pm is Stacy Bellward, long time friend of the family who lived with us one summer during her college years. She met her Scottish husband in Tanzania and earned her Masters in Communication in Ireland. Now she is a full time homemaker with two preschool age daughters (the oldest was adopted from Ethiopia). Stacy continues to pursue her career in writing and journalism by working on projects about adoption. She was also one of my main content readers during the three years I worked on the manuscript for Meet Me at the Oasis.
3pm is a super duper treat with Abby Dery, a perky 6th grader, who was born for interviewing people with her butterfly-happiness personality. And she is so darn cute with those brown eyes and light-up-the-room-smile. Her spontaneous comments will keep things lively for the last hour! All young girls are especially invited for the last hour of my book event.

Hello all, its been awhile, but I am back from surgery land and from Florida and it’s great to be in the classroom again talking about the process of writing with students. This time I went to the Alma Matters (j.k.) of my three sons, wasn’t there a TV show about this family? Anyway, I had a great time with the students at Northside Christian School in Blaine, Minnesota, the very place where Carl, Peter, and Jordan went to grade school K-8th except for third grade. Yes, I got a wild hair and home schooled my kids for 3rd grade. Everyone of them. And it was a great experience. I will answer your question (everyone else wonders this too) why just third grade? Because, I wanted to try it and 3rd is a good grade for checking out the home school experience. I learned a lot about my child’s learning style and it was educational for me as well. But then I realized that we were not the home school family and back they went to Northside.
Back to Monday April, 16, 2007. I was able to share with a group of about 25 kids grades 5-8th about my journey as a writer and share writing tips about using the five senses, which is called “Show, don’t Tell!” So, if you are trying to tell your reader that this family has a mom with brunet hair and a father with blue eyes and they have chores to do Saturday morning…well, that could get boring as a list. But, if you weave in the five senses and blend it in with plot and setting and the character’s personality traits…then you have a story that will hold the reader’s attention and they will find out information without even trying. The students were a good group of kids and I would like to go back there again. It was also great to see some of the former teachers such as Mrs. Dvorak and the cool-guy principal Dave Reid. We actually went as a family to Tanzania in 1998 to spend Christmas with Dave and his family when they were missionaries in Africa for several years.
